Make a tight fist with your left hand. Notice that your chest tightens and your breath becomes shallow. Now, open your fist and slowly extend your fingers. Notice how the muscles around your heart are eased and your breathing deepens.

How Does It Work?
Yoga compels people to slow down. It helps to increase awareness of the inside self as well as the outer surroundings. The primary focus in yoga is smooth, deep breathing, which helps to de-stress and balance the nervous system. This balance helps to relax the rest of the body, while supporting overall physical wellbeing and the ability to focus the brain.
Poses in yoga are designed to strengthen some part of the body, such as the muscles; yet, they reach beyond the physical body to the psyche. Students of yoga are amazed to learn that they have the ability to shift their mental and physical states by using body, mind and breath. Yoga gives them a much broader vision of what health is all about.
